Activities on the reserve

What do our interns get up to during their stay on UmPhafa?

Here’s an amazing video created by Camilla Brotons, who interned with us in July 2018. You’ll see some day to day life on the reserve, game counts, animal monitoring, bush clearing and tracking walks. There is also some footage taken on the interns day off, where they often go horse riding, sightseeing and a game drive on a local big 5 reserve Nambiti!

Check out recent videos from our interns’ time at the Reserve below:

As an intern to UmPhafa’s management, you will have an interesting, exciting and – overall – valuable time by playing a crucial role in the operation of the reserve.

You will develop many new skills with regards to various Conservation and Reserve Management practices. Days will be varied and some activities are seasonal but the following gives you an idea of what sort of activities you would be undertaking.

  • Animal Behavioural Studies (large game such as Giraffe)
  • Feeding Studies
  • Game Counts
  • Species Identification (an important element of the general learning experience)
  • Camera Trap Surveys
  • Large Mammal Tracking and Monitoring
  • Small Mammal and Pit Fall Trapping (seasonal)
  • Vegetation Surveys (an essential element with regards to animal carrying capacities)
  • Animal Sighting Data Collection, Entry and Analysis
  • Bush Walks & Bush Skills
  • Night Drives
  • Frogging (seasonal)
  • Fence Patrols
  • Erosion Control
  • Road Repairs
  • Various other ongoing management projects

UmPhafa offers an incredibly unique learning experience in that it is a reserve solely dedicated to Conservation. We are not open to the general public which means that we do not have to adhere to tourism demands.

Once you arrive here you will instantly become a member of our UmPhafa family and an important member of our Conservation team. Our ethos is for you to leave UmPhafa with an extensive knowledge of African Wildlife Conservation and Reserve Management Practices.

We will also share not only our beautiful home with you but allow you to explore the surrounding area of Kwa Zulu Natal, South Africa.
