Prickly Pear Plant Control
Our UmPhafa coordinator, Doreen, and new game guard, Wanda, have been working on a prickly pear project to control this alien plant. They have developed the nursery, which now contains some Cactoblastis cactorum (prickly pear moth) larvae, which they have harvested from the reserve to try to breed up larger numbers. Once they have bred this species in the nursery, they will spread the larvae onto the prickly pear plants out in the reserve. For distribution in the reserve, they have chosen six sites. They have two control sites which they have left uninfected, two that they have infected with cochineal insects (another form of prickly pear control), one with Cactoblastis moth larvae and one with a mix of the two.
