Burning fire breaks on UmPhafa
Mike Wood, UmPhafa's farm manager, constructs fire breaks every year, about a month into winter. These are burnt along all UmPhafa's fences to stop fires from neighbouring farms burning through onto our land. The breaks are usually constructed by dragging a burning rake along the fence and controlling the fire with a watercart that drives along as the fire spreads out. There are staff standing by with backpacks filled with water to get to anything that might be out of reach for the tractor and watercart. Firebreaks can be anything from 5 - 10 metres wide, depending on the importance of an area and its accessibility, as it is difficult burning breaks on mountain slopes or rocky areas.
