Genet Footage

Volunteers at UmPhafa placed feeding stations at various sites throughout the reserve in order to survey the different inhabiting small carnivores. This Genet was captured on film taking the bait and returned again and again over a period of an hour until everything had gone.

Aardvark Footage Captured

While carrying out a survey of black-backed jackal on UmPhafa Private Reserve, staff caught this video of an aardvark on camera traps set up on the reserve. The tracks and signs of this species are apparent throughout the whole of the reserve but to catch even the slightest glimpse of this elusive creature is very lucky. We baited a stick with meat and for night after night watched wary jackals circle and approached but never actually take the bait. Eventually a curious aardvark, probably drawn in by the smell of ants, was filmed at the site.

Curious Kudu Bull Caught on Camera

This very curious young kudu bull was captured on camera last week, end of May 2010.

Warthog Footage

This warthog boar was caught on film at the UmPhafa Private Reserve after several camera traps were set up around an old aardvark burrow with many warthog tracks leading in and out. Warthogs, as with all members of the pig family, have an exceptional sense of smell. This individual obviously got a fright when it smelt something unfamiliar.

Serval Footage

This serval was captured on film down near the Tugela River at the southern boundary of the reserve.

The camera trap had been set up capture bushpig but this serval happened to come past the site and became particularly curious about a new scent and spent a few moments sniffing around the camera trap.

Porcupine Footage

Staff on the Umphafa reserve were baiting for jackal with the volunteers on the reserve, but before the jackal came onto the bait these porcupines were caught sniffing around. They are clearly courting and we were very lucky to catch this display on camera.

Kudu Footage

A Kudu was captured on one of the hidden camera traps, taken by a waterhole at UmPhafa Private Reserve. The Kudu seems completely unconcerned with the camera for the length of the video!

Bushpig and piglets footage

Staff on UmPhafa have been studying bushpig to greater understanding the home ranges and foraging behaviour of this elusive animal.

This footage of a bushpig sounder was recorded by camera trap at a site that had been baited. The sow has two very young piglets with it.
